Position Summary
The Heavy Equipment/Road Grader Operator is responsible for operating motor graders and other heavy equipment to construct, maintain, and repair county roads, rights-of-way, drainage systems, and related infrastructure. This position supports safe and efficient travel throughout the county and performs skilled work under the direction of the District Commissioner or designated supervisor.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Operates a motor grader to shape, crown, blade, and maintain gravel and dirt roads.
- Operates additional heavy equipment such as:
- Front-end loaders
- Backhoes
- Dump trucks
- Rollers/compactors
- Excavators
- Performs road maintenance tasks including:
- Ditching and drainage improvements
- Culvert installation and replacement
- Snow and ice removal
- Roadway patching and surface repair
- Inspects equipment daily; reports mechanical issues and performs basic maintenance (greasing, fluid checks, blade changes).
- Reads and interprets grade stakes, maps, and instructions for road projects.
- Maintains accurate logs of work performed, materials used, and equipment hours.
- Follows all county safety policies, OSHA standards, and traffic control procedures.
- Works cooperatively with crew members, landowners, utility companies, and county officials.
- Responds to emergency call-outs for storms, washouts, debris removal, and other urgent road hazards.
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience operating a motor grader and other heavy equipment.
- Ability to perform skilled road construction and maintenance tasks with minimal supervision.
Knowledge of:
- Roadway drainage principles
- Proper crowning and shaping techniques
- Safe equipment operation
- Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License; CDL Class A or B preferred (or ability to obtain).
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform physical labor as needed.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and maintain accurate records.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience with county or municipal road maintenance.
- CDL preferred or ability to obtain
- Mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting equipment issues.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit for extended periods while operating equipment.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
- Ability to climb, bend, kneel, and work on uneven terrain.
- Ability to work in extreme heat, cold, dust, noise, and outdoor conditions.
Work Environment
- Primarily field-based work on county roads and rights-of-way.
- Exposure to traffic, heavy machinery, weather, and construction hazards.
- May require overtime, early mornings, evenings, weekends, and emergency response
Employment Classification
- Full-time position.
- Reports to: County Commissioner or District Foreman.
